Breckenridge at Christmas: Events and Things to Do

Erin Gamble • November 6, 2026

Breckenridge at Christmas is a historic Colorado ski town dressed in 250,000 LED lights, with snow on Main Street and a December full of free events. It sits at 9,600 feet in Summit County, so a white Christmas is the norm, not the exception.

The season starts on Saturday, December 5, 2026, with the Lighting of Breckenridge and the Race of the Santas. Ullr Fest follows on December 17 to 19, and the year ends with a torchlight parade and fireworks at Peak 9 on New Year's Eve.

This guide covers the 2026 event dates, the holiday lights, the best things to do between events, Christmas Day itself, dining and parking tips, and where to eat and warm up, including a Mexican après-ski cantina steps from Peak 9.

Christmas Events in Breckenridge for 2026

Breckenridge packs most of its holiday events into the first weekend of December and the week before Christmas. Most are free, and nearly all happen on or near Main Street, so you can walk from one to the next.

Lighting of Breckenridge and Race of the Santas

The Lighting of Breckenridge is the town's official start to the holidays. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, December 5, with free admission on Main Street.

The Race of the Santas starts at 4:20 pm. It is a half-mile fun run in which hundreds of runners in Santa suits dash south down historic Main Street from a lineup on Watson Avenue.

Some Santas race hard, but most run for fun. Santa suits are not included with registration, though suits and hats can be added to your order or bought at the Breckenridge Recreation Center. The first 700 registrants get commemorative socks.

At 5 pm, Santa flips the switch on the Town Tree in Blue River Plaza, just outside the Breckenridge Welcome Center at 203 S. Main St. From 5:30 to 7 pm, kids can meet Santa and share their wish lists for free.

Holiday Dog Parade and Moose March

Two smaller events lead into the race. The Holiday Dog Parade starts at 3 pm outside the Gold Pan Saloon at 103 N. Main St., with costumed dogs and owners walking south down Main Street. Staging begins at 2 pm.

The Moose March starts at 4 pm. It is a half-mile race for kids aged 10 to 17 on the same course as the adult race, and runners get a moose hat. For race questions, the Breckenridge Recreation Center takes calls at (970) 453-1734.

Handmade Holiday and the Arts District Campus Crawl

On the same evening, Handmade Holiday and the Campus Crawl run from 5 to 8 pm at the Ridge Street Arts Square, 117 Washington Ave. Entry is free.

Historic studios open their doors for artist demos, holiday crafts, carolers and local shopping. Kids can pick up a holiday bingo card and visit each space for a chance at a prize, while supplies last.

Also on December 5, the Holiday Giving Event runs from 3 to 6 pm in Blue River Plaza. It supports Summit Rotary's Adopt an Angel program, and donors get a wooden Lighting of Breckenridge ornament.

Artist Holiday Market

The Artist Holiday Market fills the Robert Whyte House at 127 S. Ridge St. from November 1 to December 30. Local artists sell their own work, and entry is free.

The 2026 listing gives hours of 10 am to 6 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, with the market closed on December 25 and 31. Payment is by Venmo only, and all profits go to the artists.

The Nutcracker and Holiday Concerts

The Alpine Dance Academy presents The Nutcracker: Kingdom of the Sweets at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center, 150 W. Adams Ave. Shows run December 4 and 5, with local Summit County dancers in the cast.

On December 10, Face Vocal Band brings its Christmas! Christmas!! Christmas!!! Concert to the Riverwalk Center. Face is an all-vocal rock band from Boulder, Colorado.

The Breckenridge Backstage Theatre, open since 1974, also tends to stage a holiday show each December. Check its schedule for the 2026 production.

Holiday Cookie Exchange and Festival of Trees

The Holiday Cookie Exchange is a free evening at the Old Masonic Hall, 136 S. Main St., on December 8 at 6 pm. Each guest brings two dozen cookies and goes home with the same number from other bakers.

The Festival of Trees is listed for December 3 to 10. Details had not been posted at the time of writing.

Ullr Fest

Ullr Fest is Breckenridge's winter festival honoring Ullr, the Norse god of snow, in hopes of a powder-filled season. The 2026 festival runs December 17 to 19 and marks its 63rd anniversary.

The main day is Thursday, December 17:

  1. 3 pm, Crowning of the Ullr King and Queen: Two local residents are honored at Blue River Plaza for their work in the community.
  2. 3:30 pm, Shotski world record attempt: A shot ski is a ski fitted with shot glasses. Breckenridge wants 1,444 people on Main Street to beat Park City's record. You must be 21 or older, and registration opens December 1, 2026.
  3. 4 pm, Ullr Parade: Floats take over Main Street, with cash prizes for the most creative. Floats must register by 5 pm on December 10.
  4. 5 to 7 pm, Ullr Bonfire: The town burns old Christmas trees in the East Sawmill Parking Lot and dances for snow.

Viking helmets are the unofficial dress code. Later in the festival, Ice Skate with Ullr brings families to the Stephen C. West Ice Arena.

The Rockstar Energy Open, a free snowboard contest with live music and a fan village, runs at Breckenridge Ski Resort from December 18 to 20, 2026.

New Year's Eve Torchlight Parade and Fireworks

On New Year's Eve, the Breckenridge Ski & Snowboard School holds its annual Torchlight Parade on Peak 9. Skiers carry red torches down more than 1,000 vertical feet, drawing a path of light like a Christmas tree on the mountain.

An hour before, kids who can ski or ride a green run on their own can join the Glow Worm Parade. Fireworks then fire from the base of Peak 9 for about 15 minutes.

GoBreck lists good viewing spots at Blue River Plaza, the North Gondola parking lot, the bases of Peaks 7, 8 and 9, Main Street Station, Ridge Street, Boreas Pass or Baldy Road, and Beaver Run Resort. Check GoBreck for the 2026 start times.

Breckenridge Christmas Lights

The Breckenridge Christmas lights are more than 59,000 feet of LED strands, about 11.2 miles, carrying 250,000 bulbs through the historic downtown. GoBreck notes they are among the most photographed sights of the snowy months.

The lights go on at the Lighting of Breckenridge on the first weekend of December, which is December 5 in 2026. They stay up through late March or early April, so visitors later in the winter still see them.

The best way to see them is on foot after dark. Walk Main Street from the Blue River Plaza with a hot drink, or make a pot of cinnamon-spiced Mexican hot chocolate back at your lodging before you head out.

Things to Do in Breckenridge at Christmas

Between events, December in Breckenridge is about snow. These are the classic holiday activities, from the slopes to the sledding hill.

Ski and Ride Over the Holidays

Christmas week is one of the busiest weeks of the ski season. Buy lift tickets at least 7 days ahead for the best savings, pick up rental gear the night before and book ski lessons online early.

For peaks, lifts, the Epic Pass and parking at the base areas, read our guide to skiing Breckenridge's five peaks.

Sleigh Rides and Snowcat Tours

Horse-drawn sleigh rides are a Breckenridge holiday classic. You can book a group hot cocoa sleigh ride with entertainment, a dinner and sleigh ride combo, or a private one-horse open sleigh.

The Breck Nordic Center runs snowcat tours in a heated, 8-passenger, all-glass cabin. Tours stop for s'mores and hot chocolate at a hut in the forest.

Sledding at Carter Park

Carter Park has the town's free sledding hill, at the end of South High Street. A "sled shed" lends sleds for free, and the town asks visitors to borrow them rather than buy new ones.

Ice Skating

The Stephen C. West Ice Arena is the town's indoor rink. It is a good pick for a cold afternoon or a day with young kids who are not on skis yet.

Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Dog Sledding

The town's two Nordic centers groom more than 50 kilometers (30 miles) of cross-country and snowshoe trails. The Breckenridge trail system adds hundreds of miles of ungroomed trails past old mining ruins.

Dog sledding with teams of Siberian huskies is another signature outing. Popular tours sell out in December, so book well ahead.

Holiday Shopping on Main Street

Breckenridge has more than 200 stores, from artisan shops and galleries to gear stores and children's boutiques. Combine a Main Street stroll with the Artist Holiday Market for handmade local gifts.

Indoor Fun on Cold Days

When the cold sets in, BreckCreate runs classes in pottery, candle making and glass blowing in the Arts District. The Eclipse Theater is the town's only movie theater, and Ready Paint Fire is a paint-your-own art studio.

Country Boy Mine offers underground gold mine tours and gold panning. Escape Room Breckenridge and Mountain Time Escape Rooms suit families and groups.

GoBreck suggests indoor plans for your first day, to help you adjust to the altitude. For more ideas in every season, see our complete list of Breckenridge activities.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in Breckenridge

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are quieter in town, but most of Breckenridge's 100-plus bars and restaurants stay open. Many do not offer special holiday menus, and some charge separately for holiday dinners, so check before you book.

Several churches hold Christmas services. GoBreck asks visitors to call ahead for times and any limits:

  • Father Dyer United Methodist Church, 310 Wellington Rd.
  • Breckenridge Christian Ministries, 103 Sawmill Rd.
  • Christ Lutheran Church, 16072 Colorado Highway 9
  • Great Divide Calvary, Colorado Mountain College, 107 Denison Placer Rd.
  • St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, 100 S. French St.
  • St. Mary's Catholic Church, 109 S. French St.
  • The Church at Agape Outpost, 15404 Colorado Highway 9

If your rental has a kitchen, a holiday cooking project fits a snowy day. Our guide to traditional Mexican holiday dishes covers the classics, and an afternoon spent on a big batch of homemade Christmas tamales feeds a whole family.

Holiday Dining Tips for Breckenridge

The holidays are one of the most popular times to visit, and many visitors eat out to celebrate. GoBreck gives these tips for December dining:

  1. Book early. Many higher-end restaurants take reservations on OpenTable, and GoBreck suggests booking a month or more ahead for holiday meals.
  2. Go early to walk-in spots. At restaurants without reservations, arrive about an hour earlier than usual and expect a wait.
  3. Arrive with everyone. Most restaurants in town will not seat an incomplete party.
  4. Try lesser-known places. Restaurants off the main strip may have shorter waits, though you should still plan ahead.
  5. Order to go. Curbside pickup and takeout are widely available, and local grocery stores sell holiday dinners for pickup.

Parking and Getting Around at Christmas

The Lighting of Breckenridge weekend is one of the busiest of the year. Most downtown lots are paid and fill fast, so GoBreck advises arriving early and parking once for the day.

The South Gondola parking structure at 150 Watson Ave. is the most convenient paid option. The Free Skier Shuttle Lot on McCain Road offers free day parking from 6 am to 11 pm, with no overnight parking, and the Airport Road lot is permanently closed.

The Breck Free Ride bus system is free and links town with the ski base areas. If you drive from Denver, check GoI70.com for the best times to travel and avoid traffic.

Tips for Planning a Christmas Trip to Breckenridge

A December trip goes better with a little planning. These tips come from the Breckenridge Tourism Office:

  • Plan for altitude. The town sits at 9,600 feet, and the ski resort's summit reaches 12,998 feet. Take your first day easy.
  • Dress in layers. Bring waterproof gear, plus sunglasses, goggles and sunscreen. Breckenridge gets about 300 days of sunshine a year.
  • Book tours early. Guided tours with limited space, like dog sledding and snowmobiling, sell out over the holidays.
  • Check the forecast. Watch for the next powder day on local forecasts and webcams.
  • Follow Leave No Trace. The town asks visitors to help protect the trails and forests around it.

After the Holidays: Snow Sculptures in January

If you can stay past New Year's, the 36th International Snow Sculpture Championships come to the Riverwalk Center from January 23 to February 2, 2027. Teams from around the world hand-carve 12-foot-tall, 25-ton blocks of snow, with no power tools allowed.

Sculpting Week runs January 23 to 27, and Viewing Week runs January 27 to February 2. Entry is free.
